Learning Targets:

  • 1. How will I apply scientific principles to design a method for monitoring and minimizing a human impact on the environment?
  • 2. Can I identify actions that counter-act negative human impacts on the Earth and its inhabitants?
  • 3. Can I make a connection between Environmental concepts and their human impacts to Chemistry concepts that help us to understand these impacts?
  • ~~~~~~~~~
  • 1. Can you explain the difference between atoms, elements, molecules,  and compounds?
  • 2.  How do we write the chemical symbols for elements and compounds?
  • 3. Can you recognize the difference between complex molecules and more simple molecules?
  • 4. Can you label different elements /atoms in a molecule?
  • 5. Can you build a 3D molecule from a 2D sketch, referring to the Chemical Formula?

Today in Class:

  1. First, I checked again with any students who needed to take the past Chemistry Quiz #3 (due to your absence). Those students started on these, or came in at lunch for an oral quiz.

2. Completion of Class Activity: Earth Day Challenge #1: Will You Be an Earth Day Champion? We worked on this together.

We revisited your ideas and the positive impacts and concerns for the environmental weaknesses that you noticed yesterday on our walk around school. You ran your ideas by other students in your table group – so this was your second chance to list and identify these.

3. Next , we worked on Part III: Chemistry review questions on your Earth Day Challenge worksheet concerning that negative human impact (ex.: too many people use single-use plastic water bottles, or too much trash or water pollution) by answering questions about:

-Compounds and Elements involved (Types of Matter)

-Chemical and Physical Properties (including Density)

-Types of Matter

We completed Part III together as a class.

4. The second half of class: Molecule Model Madness!

a. Next I reminded everyone to take out their Molecule Madness Model worksheets.  You were directed to work on side 3 of the worksheet.

A.   —-> FIRST: You answered the questions on the worksheet “Build a Molecule, Molecule Madness” and sketched this 2D Model, and labeled the atoms!

B. You looked over the designated websites (linked below) that contained sketches, diagrams of many many molecules. These illustrations depict the number and types of atoms in the molecules.

C. You also referred to these last Friday (and some started this today): you selected one model to draw and build Friday and today, and drew and referred to 2D models to build a 3D model.

D. You should also have been able to relate the Chemical Formula for the Molecule to the number of atoms and the different elements for the compound.

E. You then referred to one of the 2D diagram you sketched today and you answered questions on the worksheet and you used molecule kits to build the 3D model.

Almost everyone answered questions on side one and two – about your molecule models, and built 2 molecule models using the kits. Nice work!
