Learning Targets and Goals

  • 1. Can you represent different types of matter with a sketch or diagram? How will you demonstrate your understanding with these types of notes?
  • 2. Can you differentiate the different types of matter from one another?
  • 3. Can you organize examples of different types of matter?
  • 4. If some type of matter is changed in some way, can you determine if a compound or element or mixture has been formed?
  • 5. Can you explain how Extended Molecules are different than other simple molecules (of different compounds)? What are some examples of different types of Extended Molecules?

Today in Class:

First, Student table -partners finished their reading about Molecules: Unit 1, Less 2, Sections 1-3. Most teams needed to just complete reading section 3- especially in reading page 30, with the diagrams of different classification of molecules and their explanations. ! with each class. Then each team read Unit 1, Lesson 3, Section 7, Mixtures. If you would like to read more about the different types of Mixtures,

Ducksters Chemistry for Kids: Mixtures

LibreTexts: Mixtures

Next: Students- you had some great time in class to draw and label “Sketch Notes” for Types of Matter. Many of you referred to the book to draw some molecules or atoms. Others referred to some of the sketch notes that I had examples of on the Smart Board (see below). Still other students found some examples of Mixtures (candy mixes, cereals) by searching online. Terrific Work!

I walked up to most students and asked you questions, such as:

  • Which type of matter did you draw?
  • How many atoms are in your diagram?
  • How many elements are in your diagram?
  • Is this a heterogeneous or homogeneous mixture?
  • How can you determine that this is a compound and not an element?

4. In the last 10 minutes of class, each of you participated in an online simulation “Build an Atom!” by PhET and phET Build a Molecule Simulation Most of you really had fun with this! terrific!

Homework: Review and Study Types of Matter (Sketch Notes) and Density!

Quiz Friday!
