Learning Targets and Goals

  • 1. Can you identify key science concepts that helped to explain your results in your Golf Ball experiment?
  • 2. Can you explain the difference between the Control and Independent Variable sets of trials for your investigation?
  • 3. What explanation and reasoning statement will you state (orally and in written form) for the different results of the golf balls sinking and floating in the investigation?
  • . Can you organize different types of matter in a 4-Square format? Can you find real-world examples of these 4 types of matter?

Today in Class:

1. First: you all discussed your results for the Golf Ball Lab. Then you discussed your Reasoning statements with your partners once more, You determined what the final Reasoning statement would be, and then you typed this onto the class Google.Slide presentation for the Golf Ball Lab.

2. Next – you evaluated your Engineering Design Plan Box Paper. We did this together noting the points for each section.

3. Next, we went outside and I noted 4 types of matter: Elements, Compounds, Homogeneous Mixtures and Heterogeneous Mixtures. After a short explanation of each, you were to walk around the area and look for real-world examples of each. This was just an introduction of types of matter. Monday we will take sketch notes of each and discuss these notes further.

Some of the examples that students noted:

  • oxygen = element
  • carbon dioxide = compound
  • water = compound
  • sand, dirt and little pebbles = heterogeneous mixture
  • water + sediment or dirt = heterogeneous mixtures
  • grass = compounds
  • smoothie – homogeneous mixture
  • lemondade = homogeneous mixture

Homework: no homework.
