Learning Targets and Goals

  • 1. Can you explain how to effectively write a list of Materials and a step-by-step set of directions in a Procedure demonstrated experiment?
  • 2. How will you utilize your brainstormed ideas and Claim to write a clear Method or Procedure, that will help to solve the Problem of this investigation?
  • 3. Can you identify and give examples of Independent and Dependent Variables and Control Experiments?
  • 4. How will you design a graph or table that effectively illustrates your data: your Independent and Dependent Variables, and Control Experiment?

Today in Class:

1. First: I asked you to complete an Entrance Ticket that demonstrated whether (or not) you watched the Mythbusters video and reviewed Independent and Dependent Variables, and Control Experiments. This should have been a great check for you also – to help you determine if you understand these key concepts, and let you know if you were ready to create your graph or table.

***If you are still needing more review on Independent and Dependent Variable and Control Experiments, here is a link to a short video clip with examples of the experiment with the runners: Science101 Types of Experiments . Also check the Notes for the Unit on this Blog– it has examples of how to label these measurements on a graph.

***I reminded you that it is very important to complete homework and classwork to prepare for labs (Pre-Lab work).

2. Next- You had more time to re-check your ASK and IMAGINE sections of the Engineering Design Plan for the Golf Ball Lab. You should have completed this yesterday. If you made Improvements – you wrote these in blue ink.

—> I checked/ graded each team’s papers – for this section.

3. You and your teammate(s) next completed your Materials list in the PLAN section. I reminded you to note Metric Measurements / units with those materials that needed this. Many students had started this in class yesterday.

4. Then – once you had your Materials list completed, you should have written a clear list for the Procedure or Method (PLAN section).

5. Now, you and your teammate(s) drew a rough draft of a graph or table on the CREATE section of the STEM EDP Box Paper. You were encouraged to think and brainstorm: what should be your labels and title, and which types of measurements were you making. Most groups took 10 minutes or so to decide this. I also shared a slide with you – to show you how the final results would be posted on a Google.Slide with your class results.

Homework:

Bring in your (Independent Variable) material needed to run trials on the Golf Ball lab tomorrow.

IF you did not complete your STEM EDP in class today (and yesterday ) these sections are expected to be completed:
